Myself and my husband are living in Shanghai,we are both Irish. We are in the process of adopting a beautiful little 2 year old girl.We are wondering how we register the adoption with the Irish Adoption Board. Can we do it while living in Shanghai or do we need to go home to Ireland to do this? Can our Irish Consulate here in Shanghai help us with this? Any advice on this matter will be greatly appreciated.
It seems that since the introduction of the new legislation, registration procedures are no longer set.
I suggest you get in touch with your Consulate so they can advise you.
Alternatively contact the adoption board about it.
If you have gone through the whole adoption process via yuor local Shanghai authorities, it is not like you got the approval in Ireland and then adopted.
So in order to act the adotpion in Ireland you will probably need to go to court to prove that Shanghai’s laws are compatible with the Irish laws. (For instance it cannot be a “simple adoption”.
An easier route could be to get Citizenship for your child.
We will keep an eye open and see if anything comes up on that front.
In the meantime check out:
