In Montpellier, France, the mayor of the city decided to married a gay French-Portugese couple and even if the gay marriage is not authorized in France.

The union was first refused by the embassy of Portugal whereas Portugal is one of the European countries allowing same-sex marriage. As a result, the marriage will be celebrated in France.
“We can go to Portugal to marry, but we want the things progress in France.”

This marriage will not be complete, there will be no signatures on marriage acts, just an official celebration. I point out that the last time that a mayor has celebrated a gay marriage with signatures on acts, the marriage was cancelled by the government.

Helene Mandroux, the mayor of Montpellier, is well-known for her fight for the equality, she is at the origin of the call of Montpellier launched in 2009. She had also written in last November to the President of the republic, Nicolas Sarkosy, deploring that the legislation does not give “yet in our country the same access to the marriage, the pacs or the free union” and wishing “that the government takes care finally of this”.

The couple decided to hug instead of kissing, so they can keep the kiss for the real deal!
