2011-02-08: South Africa, Irish woman killed at her home in Cape Town

Police in South Africa have confirmed that an Irish woman was killed during a suspected robbery attempt at her home in Cape Town last week.

67-year-old Cecily Clarke, originally from Dublin, was confronted and attacked at her home in Furze Avenue Claremont last Wednesday.

Her husband arrived on the scene and there was further altercation after which the husband pretended to be unconscious.

The raider continued to ransack the house upstairs, at which point the husband managed to activate the panic alarm which alerted security and they detained the raider.

Ms Clarke was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man appeared in court yesterday and was charged with murder and burglary.

He has been remanded in custody.
