Session 6 – Final meeting: country of choice

Country of Choice

Why have you chosen that particular country?

Do not limit your answer to technicalities regarding the limited number of countries from which same-gender couples can adopt.

You need a sort of connection beyond necessity, and a real liking for the culture. It could have evolved from necessity, but cannot be limited to it, otherwise you will be (rightly) perceived as shopping around.

What research have you carried out in relation to the adoption process in that country?

Remember to contact the Adoption Authority of the country to find more information.

What do you know about the adoption process in this country?

What do you know about the reasons why children are placed for adoption in this country?

Try to find evidence in your Media Watch. Concentrate your media search on Ireland and the country of choice.

Start by searching for adoption related articles in the Irish media and the country’s media, as well as article about the country in the Irish media, and about Ireland in the country’s media.

What do you know about the quality of care in that country’s orphanages?

What research have you carried out in relation to the culture of this country?

Again, include cultural article in your Media Watch.

What do you know about the culture and people of this country?

Make sure you register on a number of forums to start discussing with people from the country you want to adopt from.

Do you plan to promote the culture in the life of the adopted child in the future?
Why?

It is important to be able to promote the country positively, but also sincerely.

Even of the child is not interested (not yet, or no longer), your own interest needs to be genuine. Your job is to maintain a “door way” that can be used in the future by the child.

If you only pay lip service to the culture by dressing the child in a “costume” once a year, it will do nothing to integrate that culture into a positive self image, quite the opposite. It will be perceived by the child and by others as being fake, simply because it will be so.
