Pop singer Ricky Martin is to receive an award from a leading US gay and lesbian organisation after coming out as gay last year.
The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (Glaad) gives the Vito Russo Award to openly gay entertainers who promote equal rights.
“Ricky coming out was a game changer for many gay and transgender Latino children,” Glaad said.
“For too long, [they] did not have many out gay people to look up to.”
Martin will receive the honour at a ceremony in New York next month.
Tony Award and Emmy Award-winning actress Kristin Chenoweth will also be honoured after criticising a Newsweek article that said gay actors could not convincingly play straight roles.
“When allies like Kristin take such powerful stands against anti-gay sentiments in the media, it sends an important message of equality,” Glaad president Jarrett Barrios said.

Will Young has clarified comments he made in which he seemingly revealed that he would like to become a father.
A tabloid report suggested that the 32-year-old had ruled out using a surrogate mother in order to have a baby. However, speaking to Metro, Young explained the origins of his comments.
“Someone asked me at an awards show recently if I wanted kids, which seems to be a standard question to ask gay men these days,” he told the paper. “I said yes and he said: ‘How would you have a child?’ I said, ‘Through penetrative sex’. Continue reading »

Alison is currently studying photography in college.
The final project she is undertaking is based on an idea called, “A Child Denied”. It highlights the rights denied to children in LGBT families in Ireland.
When completed the work will be displayed in the National College of Art and Design exhibition show in June/July sometime. Hopefully there will be a bit of exposure highlighting the issue.
If you know any families that might be interested in a shoot she’d be very grateful if you contacted her, and/or passed the word around.
Her starting point is shooting subjects that are raising one (or more) child(ren) in Ireland, but any thoughts would be much appreciated.
After all, we are family!

You can also leave a comment or a suggestion on her project.
Here is an example of her work, at Pride 2010:

A junior minister has called for reform of family law to give equal rights to single fathers and unmarried couples.Mary White, Green Party TD and minister for equality, warned many men suffer difficulties from marital or relationship breakdown and a lack of access to their children.
She said: “In parallel with the need for support and services for fathers is the need for reform of family law. At the heart of society there must be equality before the law and I hope that soon there will be equality between parents, regardless of gender or marital status.” Continue reading »

For the second day, it kept up its public criticism of the choice of Edwards, whose success in fertilising a human egg outside of the womb led to “test tube babies” and innovations such as embryonic stem cell research and surrogate motherhood.
The Vatican ratcheted up its negative opinion as several leading Italian newspapers criticised it for its attack on Edwards.
A statement by the Vatican-based International Federation of Catholic Medical Associations (FIAMC), said it was “dismayed” at the choice.
“Although IVF has brought happiness to the many couples who have conceived through this process, it has done so at enormous cost,” the federation said in a statement issued on Vatican letter head.
“Many millions of embryos have been created and discarded during the IVF process,” it said, adding that embryos were being used as “animals destined for destruction”. Continue reading »
