Erin is among the few fortunate children in South Africa who have found a “forever family”. The need for a safe, permanent home runs deep, and everywhere, with between 1.5 million and 2 million children who could benefit from adoption. But only about 2 400 people adopt children every year and even that low figure is on the decline.

Now an ambitious new campaign hopes to turn this bleak outlook for South Africa’s abandoned and orphaned children around.

Next week, as part of Child Protection Week, the National Adoption Coalition is launching its Addoption project to raise awareness about the plight of the country’s “adoptable” children and encourage more people to open their hearts – and homes – to children. The coalition spans the Department of Social Development, NGOs and social workers in private practice who aim to crush the “great mistrust” around adoption and overcome the cultural barriers that exist. It has now set up a website and call centre. Continue reading »

Mr Shannon is encouraging couples wishing to adopt to travel only to jurisdictions that have ratified the Hague Convention.

Lesbian activists in the South African capital of Cape Town held a demonstration outside parliament yesterday to call for more action on the problem of ‘corrective rape’.

The 25 campaigners from lesbian group Luleki Sizwe want Justice Minister Jeff Radebe to recognise the issue as a hate crime.

‘Corrective rape’, as it is known, is the rape of lesbians to try and ‘turn’ them straight. Campaigners say it is becoming more common.

The most high-profile case was in 2008, when lesbian footballer Eudy Simelane was raped, beaten and murdered. Two men were jailed for her killing. Continue reading »

Baby Faith has been abandoned – not by the young mother who gave her up for adoption but by the system that was meant to help her.

Even though two local couples are waiting to adopt her, she spent Christmas in a home for abandoned babies.

The six-month-old girl is the victim of an extremely rigorous new Childcare Act which cannot be properly implemented and has pathetically under-resourced service providers and massive inefficiencies.

It is a small wonder, then, that crisis parents from Durban’s overburdened baby homes were horrified when MEC for Social Development Meshack Radebe decided to adopt two children “on the spot” during a visit to a centre last week. Whether it was a publicity stunt or a heartfelt gesture, he has now lifted the lid on an extremely controversial issues surrounding adoption in South Africa. Continue reading »

Kwazulu-Natal’s MEC for Social Development, Meshack Radebe, has promised to legally adopt two Aids orphans from the Shepherd’s Keep Home for abandoned babies on the Bluff.

He visited the home on Monday to present food hampers as part of the department’s Christmas giving to organisations for the work they do.

It was believed Radebe would start the adoption process early next year, to add to his family of eight children.

He promised a loving home for both the children and an education bursary.

“I’ll watch them grow to be doctors and lawyers,” he said.   Continue reading »
